Our chicks arrived last Thursday. Graham and I picked up a very chirpy cardboard box from the post office in Waterville. If you’re unfamiliar with the chick mailing thing, our understanding is that the eggs hatch on day 1, the birdlets are sexed (checked to see if they’re boys or girls — we ordered “all girls”) and shipped on day 2 and we receive them when they’re three days old. We’ve read that it takes something around 5 months for them to start laying, so we’ll probably start getting pullet or starter eggs sometime in July. The chicks we ordered are of the breed Americauna, which are known for laying multi-colored “Easter” eggs. Generally that means brown and a light blue or bluish green, but some folks swear that there’s a pink egg in there sometimes.

If cute baby chicken pictures aren’t a good excuse for a blog post, then nothing is!
